The art of Taekwondo

Taekwondo Mpumalanga Province who is also members of Taekwondo International and Taekwondo Association of Great Britain has opened a Taekwondo club in Thulamahashe, Bushbuckridge under the leadership of qualified National Taekwondo instructor (Sabunim) Conwell Mkhonto.

Mkhonto is a 3rd-degree black belt of Taekwondo international and also a Police Constable at Acornhoek Police station. He teaches Taekwondo in Thulamahashe, the club started on the 3rd March 2018 and Mkhonto has now got 37 students.

He started Karate in 1996 at Thulamahashe under the supervision of Mr. Elvis Mhlanga who was his mentor, and he went on to attend training in Seshego near Polokwane and trained under Sensei Ezrom Mogano the Kyokushinkai karate legend of Limpopo in that time.

Mkhonto graded a red belt of Kyokushinkai karate under the vigilant eye of Sensei Ezrom Mogano. He was employed by the South African Police service and he started working in the City of Mbombela in 2010 as a Police Constable.

He since joined Shotokan Karate under Sensei Judas Siboza and he graduated in 2011 to be a purple belt of Shotokan karate. He won in Shotokan Karate National championship which was held in Secunda in 2010, winning a Gold Medal in Fighting and Patterns. He was awarded a trophy for becoming a grand champion.

In 2012, Mkhonto joined the new Taekwondo club in the City of Mbombela under Master Job Magagula the 5th-degree black belt of Taekwondo International. Magagula was selected for 2018 World Championship.

He won a Bronze Medal and became in the top 5 in board breaking international.

The world championship was held in Coventry City England/3000 competitors from 60 countries participated. Magagula is one of the respected Martial artists in the world.

After Magagula taught Mkhonto the art of Taekwondo, he has since won the South African Police Service Martial arts championship and won gold medals in fighting and patterns in 2012 and 2014. In 2013 Mkhonto was profiled on Mzansi Magic TV as a Karate Cop, Nelspruit post and City Press newspaper as the City Constable hero.

Mkhonto is currently a 3rd-degree black belt of Taekwondo, under the supervision of Master Magagula the President of Taekwondo Mpumalanga Province in 2018 Taekwondo World Championship.

He was selected to represent South Africa in the 13 Taekwondo international World championships which were in Burningham/England on the 21-22 July 2018. He is also the Captain of Taekwondo Mpumalanga Province Team.

The team is busy preparing for the 2019 Taekwondo Alliance World Championship to be held in the United States of America and 2020 taekwondo international to be held in Great Britain.
